Lovely hotel and great location however the bed was far too soft and uncomfortable and there was an awful group of people in the hotel bar being unsociable and rude, letting their kids run riot, swearing, being aggressive towards us as they were under the impression we had been given complimentary drinks(which we hadn't) in regards to their behaviour and they pulled down the Christmas tree and were kicking the decorations around the bar. When we spoke to the barman he said this was the second night they had been there behaving this way yet nothing seemed to have been done to address this as a customer has to complain apparently, so we did and they shut the bar but this was ten at night anyway and they were closing around then. This was quite unpleasant and the family were quite aggressive towards us and put a dampener on the beginning of our holiday.
Terrific location, right by New Street station in the city centre. Everything was clean and tidy, but the room was just a dull, dated box. Reception staff good enough, but breakfast and bar staff didn't seem to want to be there. Heating in room was inadequate - had to sit with duvet wrapped round me. Was 7 or 8 degrees outside, so far from wintery, but it took 24 hours of the radiator on full for it get vaguely warm.
I love the fact I can step off a train at New St and be in this ageing classic hotel within 5 minutes !!! I got checked in early, dropped the bag off in the room and made a cuppa, the room was freezing cold a word to reception staff and boiler was re set . Bathroom was clean but dated as is the rest of the hotel. Lots of street noise at night even from floor 4 , morning slumber was disturbed forc20 mins by a shop alarm !!! Breakfast was disappointing, not the experience of old, however staff were pleasant and attentive.
Enjoyable stay. The room was a little worn, creaking floors, modern amenities and fixtures. Cleanliness could be a little better. For the price I expected something a little more. Fantastic service. The staff were friendly, professional, and helpful. Excellent location in the middle of Birmingham city. Various public transport on the doorstep, Birmingham New Street station across the street. Great little coffee shops and restaurants nearby.
